A
voice-capable modem is a modem that has an additional set of hardware chips that enable it to act as an audio device, equivalent to the sound card in your computer. However, unlike your sound card that
provides audio through a microphone and speakers, the voice-capable modem provides audio through the telephone line.I have a voice-capable modem, but PCA says it can't find any voice-capable
modems on my system. What's wrong?
You need to make sure that your modem supports the Unimodem/V feature. Check with the manufacturer of your modem and ask them how to install the wave drivers for
your modem if necessary.
I checked with my modem manufacturer and am still unsure whether my existing modem will support PCA. What now?
The best solution my be the PCA ProPlus. This
version includes a Lucent chip based internal FaxModem at an additional cost of $40.00 that fully supports PCA Pro.
I purchased the PCA ProPlus and found that my existing modem works fine
with PCA. Can I return the FaxModem for a refund?
Yes. Simply return the Lucent chip based internal FaxModem, in its original condition, to Concierge Technologies and we will refund the full $40.00.
Is PCA compatible with DSL, i.e. if the e-mail message is received on a machine connected to the Internet via DSL, is it possible to dial into that computer over DSL to use the PCA software?
PCA is compatible with DSL for retrieving e-mail messages from your ISP. You cannot "dial into" a DSL line. For calling into PCA, and using AutoPage notification, you need a voice-capable
modem attached to a standard telephone line.
What about Cable Internet service providers?
Yes, PCA is also compatible with cable modems. However, you still must have a voice-capable
modem attached to a standard telephone line to call into PCA and to use AutoPage notification.
Will PCA work with Lotus Notes?
No, Lotus Notes does not support MAPI messaging. PCA will
work with Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook, and Microsoft Exchange Client (Also known as the Windows Messaging System). While Netscape Communicator and Eudora both claim to provide MAPI support,
Concierge Technologies cannot guarantee that their implementation is fully MAPI-compliant.
Does PCA work with e-mail clients other than Outlook Express and Outlook?
Only PC-based
e-mail clients that fully support the Microsoft Messaging (MAPI) standard are compatible with PCA. There are two key issues in this statement:
- There are Internet-based e-mail services such as Microsoft Hotmail, AOL, and Yahoo! Mail that do not run on your own PC. Consequently, PCA does not have access to the messages stored on these
services.
- Netscape Messenger and Eudora both support MAPI. However, they are "MAPI-compatible", and do not comply strictly to the Microsoft MAPI standards. As a result, if you are using either of
these e-mail clients, we cannot guarantee that PCA will be able to function properly.

When I dial using my handset, I do not hear anything while I am dialing, nor do I see the numbers on-screen. Is this normal?
First of all, make sure that you are dialing
correctly. When you are dialing using the phone connected to your modem, you have to press the # key before and after your dialing sequence. Also, you must dial 1 + area code
every time, even when you are calling within your area code. This is the correct dialing sequence:
# 1+ area code + phone number #
You will not
hear the tones you normally hear when dialing on an analog phone. The number will not be displayed on-screen until you have pressed the # key the second time.
I have been using the on-screen
keypad to dial, but trying to use my handset to speak. I seem to always get a distorted connection. What's going wrong?
If you are using the handset to converse, but using the on-screen dialpad to
dial, you will need to press the # key once on the handset. This will eliminate the interference you are experiencing.
